Here’s a sweet option to brighten the end of 2018 – even after the autumn leaves have dropped – for fans of train rides, Vermont mountains, and the music of Livingston Taylor.
From November 7 to 11, 2018, Roots on the Rails and the Green Mountain Express will host a round-trip train excursion from Grafton to Burlington, Vermont, and back. Your celebrity host is Livingston Taylor and friends Susan Werner and Peter Mulvey.
Travel on our own exclusive private train with vintage rail cars; live music onboard each day; fresh, local foods and beverages. You will enjoy views of tiny villages, rolling farmland, the majestic Connecticut River, spectacular Lake Champlain, and the artsy small city of Burlington. Oh, and expect to see cows – Vermont’s favorite four-legged creature and the source of much of its culinary art.
Wednesday, November 7: Arrive at Grafton, Vermont, for a night at the lovely and historic Grafton Inn. Dinner is at the Inn or in nearby Bellows Falls and Saxtons River. At an evening social hour in which you can meet your fellow travelers and artists.
Thursday, November 8: A shuttle bus to Bellows Falls is followed by boarding the train for a day-long, music-filled journey over the spine of the Green Mountains and into Burlington. It is a place of great restaurants, brew pubs, and other attractions.
Friday, November 9: During this day in the Burlington area you may tour the Shelburne Museum, Ben and Jerry’s factory (free samples!), and a local cider mill. Dinner is followed by an evening concert at the Higher Ground.
Saturday, November 10: The chartered train re-traces the journey to Bellows Falls and then to the Grafton Inn for a farewell dinner and informal music in the pub.
Sunday, November 11: After breakfast at the Inn, shuttle service is provided to the Bellows Falls station is provided for people who are taking the train southward.
