This is the start of a 3-day weekend for people who have January 20 off work to commemorate the holiday for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Consequently, ski areas are putting on lots of family-oriented fun, and there is a lot happening in the cities and the flatlands, too. MLK Weekend at the Ski Mountains. Jan. 17-19 — At Sugarbush in Warren, VT, the weekend brings lots of live music in the evenings, a chance to dive into s’mores, arts and crafts displays and sales, dining by the fireplaced, a children’s magic show, and a torchlight parade down the mountain. At Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH, kids and adults can enjoy snowcat rides, fireworks and a torchlight parade. A torchlight parade also is going to happen at Sunday River in Newry, Maine, along with snow tubing, day and night.
Boston Celtic Music Fest at Passim, Cambridge, MA. Jan. 16-19 — Passim, the popular folk music venue, hosts this annual festival of Celtic performers from around Boston. You will hear some of the best musicians in the region, in an atmosphere and comradeship and joy.
Evening of Illumination at Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, MA. Jan. 17 — Take this after-dark tour of Old Sturbridge Village to feel what it was like to live in a time before electricity. Visit villagers and enjoy music and storytelling. After the tours, Bullard Tavern will be serving mulled cider and other beverages. Repeats on January 31.
“A Bronx Tale” at Hanover Theatre, Worcester, MA. Jan. 16-19 — This blend of “Jersey Boys” and “West Side Story” happens in the Bronx in the 1960s, where a young man is caught between his adored father and the enticement of the mob life.
Salem Comedy & Spirits Festival in Salem, MA. Jan. 16-18 – More than a dozen comedians vie to make you split your sides laughing. The festival celebrates the craft of comedy, both for the audience as well as for the seasoned comedians. See website for details.
Books and Bon Bons at Gore Place, Waltham, MA. Jan. 17 — Books and candy! Join Gore Place Mansion for a preview party for the annual book sale. Find gently used books at low prices and sample chocolate treats.
