"My Dad Fixed the Lighthouse" Father's Day Event on June 17

Cruise from Salem, Massachusetts, to Baker’s Island Light

This is a day out to honor dad that everyone in the family can enjoy: a cruise from Blaney Street Dock in Salem, MA, out to Baker's Island and its Light Station with Marty Nally, author of the children's book, "My Dad Fixed the Lighthouse." The trip to the island aboard the landing craft Naumkeag will be offered morning and afternoon. The tours include a harbor and lighthouse tour. Island-hopping in June in New England is a gorgeous start for the summer.

Quechee, Vermont

The closer you get to these brightly colored, air-filled behemoths, the more magical they become. Watch as ballooning experts fill, raise, and lift off these peaceful machines of travel and whimsy. Take a ride, free or tethered; you will never forget the feeling. The festival offers 20 hot air balloons, with schedule five flights, tethered rides, music and entertainment, artisans and vendors. Children’s activities include train rides, a bounce house and more.

The captivating wildflower, the lupine, is the star of a month-long appreciation and series of events in the northern mountains of New Hampshire. You can take a horse-drawn wagon rides through the lupines, and, on June 16-17, see pop-up art on the lawn at Polly’s Pancake Parlor, 672 Route 117 in Sugar Hill. The art is on display 10 a.mm.-2 p.m. – a perfect interval for a pancake lunch, by the way. [Painting by Debbie Aldrich]

Boothbay Harbor Oceanside Golf Resort, Round Top Farm and other locations Near Damariscotta

Whether or not you have a taste for the royal bivalve, Damariscotta and its surrounding area is a beautiful place for a June getaway. On June 15, Tour de Source is a behind-the-scenes look at the Damariscotta oyster community, where you can meet the oyster farmers and taste your way around the Damariscotta River. Friday night is Taste Maine's Future at Round Top Farm. On Saturday, the celebration culminates with oyster shuckers in a timed competition for the Can-Am Shuck Star.

Rose Weekend 2018 at Elizabeth Park on June 16-17

Elizabeth Park, West Hartford, Connecticut

Featuring thousands of rose bushes and arches in bloom. Saturday’s offerings include poetry readings, Healthy West Hartford Fair, Bonsai Society Show, and a tulip bulb sale. Sunday’s offerings include The Life and Times of Django Reinhardt, performed by guitarist Sinan Bakir and narrated by Mike McGarry (2:15-3 p.m.); rose garden tours; Bonsai Society Show, and a tulip bulb sale, scavenger hunt for the whole family.

“Ain’t Misbehavin’” through June 17

Theatre by the Sea, Wakefield, Rhode Island

This Tony Award-winning musical revue brings to life the captivating music of the Harlem Renaissance and the brilliant Fats Waller. Five performers give their all to songs including “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “This Joint is Jumpin’.” It will be all you can do to refrain from jumping out of your seats to join in the fun.
