Columbus Day holiday arrives early this year. Be prepared! Many places in New England host outdoor events celebrating foliage, food, music and the chance to get together in gorgeous weather. Here are some of our favorites:

Rhode Island -- Scituate Art Festival in Scituate
October 7-9, 2017
This is a very pretty village in the underappreciated interior of Rhode Island. Tons to find arts, interesting crafts, antiques and junk are on display. Lots of good food and music. We always pick up an apple turnover. Map

Maine -- Fall Festival and Wife-Carrying Championships at Sunday River in Newry
October 7, 2017
It’s a pure hoot to watch couples compete in this traditional Finnish race for the grand prize of the wife's weight in beer. Also: pie eating contest, arts and craft fair, wine tent, and scenic chairlift rides. Map

404-GREYLOCK.jpgMassachusetts -- RambleFest and Hike Up Mount Greylock in Adams
October 8-9, 2017
Never miss a chance to visit Mount Greylock in the Berkshire Mountains. Glorious views! This two-day event is an outdoor street festival and a walk up the mountain (on Monday). Leashed pets are welcome. Map

Connecticut -- Outdoor Arts Festival at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich
October 7-8, 2017
This delightful museum is always welcoming to visitors or all ages, emphasizing environment education for families and kids. At this fest, than 85 new artists from across the country will showcase their work. Map.

Vermont -- Stowe Foliage Arts Festival in Stowe
October 6-8, 2017
Vermonters love their food culture, so you can bet that, along with the works of 200 juried artisans, you will find and enjoy great food here: craft beer, wine, maple syrup, gourmet chocolate, distilled spirits and more. Map.

New Hampshire -- White Mountain Oktoberfest 2017 at Loon Mountain
October 7-8, 2017
Enjoy beer, German sausages and Germny oompah music at this Oktoberfst in the mountains of New Hampshire. Compete, if you like in the stein-holding contest, keg toss, and kids’ a root beer keg toss. Map
