Blithewold, built in 1896 in Bristol, RI, is a summer estate, mansion and gardens with grand views of Narragansett Bay. The 45-room Queen Anne mansion tells the story of its builders, an artistic and adventurous Gilded Age family, A series of lovely gardens range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical. Blithewold welcomes everyone to enjoy the beauty of summer. In addition to regular hours for visits, people are urged to come for these regular events:
Wednesday Walk-Arounds and Saturday Strolls. Docents tell the story of the Van Wickle/McKee family, who built this seaside garden estate. See breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay and the mansion’s original furnishings. The guided tour includes the grounds’ magnificent trees and gardens and ends with tea on the North West Porch. (July 12- October 18, 11 a.m.)
Music at Sunset: Summer Concert Series. Spread out a picnic basket and enjoy the sunset over Narragansett Bay as you enjoy a kaleidoscope of musical performances. (Wednesday evenings, July 1-August 23, 6 p.m.)
Family Fun Fridays. Bring a picnic, a blanket, and dance and sing along with the kids to a variety of child-oriented musical performances. Afterward, enjoy a nature-inspired craft activity, face painting, and pizza. (July 21- August 25, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.)
Blithewold is half an hour or less drive from Providence, Newport, and southeastern Massachusetts. It is less than an hour’s drive from Boston.
