The longest day of the year dawned on the United States first today at West Quoddy Lighthouse in northern Maine, the easternmost point of the continental U.S. A lighthouse visit or tour to Maine is a glorious way to feel the ancient roots of New England seafaring culture. Quick bits: Maine has the most lighthouses in New England (about 60); Rhode Island has a lighthouse (Rose Island, near Newport) that hosts a July 4th barbecue party; many lighthouses allow you to climb to the top or visit the keeper’s quarters; some have small museums, selling lighthouse gifts and charts. You can take a boat tour to Sheffield Island off the coast of Norwalk, Connecticut, to see Sheffield Island Lighthouse and enjoy a picnic and a stroll on the island. Even inland Vermont has 3 lighthouses, on Lake Champlain.
