The summer Solstice is coming next week (June 21) and that reminds us of America’s Stonehenge, an eerie place in Salem, NH, that is probably the older man-made construction in continental United States. America's Stonehenge was built by ancient people well versed in astronomy and stone construction. It is an accurate astronomical calendar and can be used to determine solar and lunar events of the year. Various inscriptions have been found throughout the site including Ogham, Phoenician and Iberian Punic Script. The place hosts a Summer Solstice ritual on June 21 at 2 p.m., preceded by a lesson on archaeoastronomy. Daily activities include a Kids Gemstone Dig, through Labor Day. Find more Outdoor Adventures.
