You can almost feel the spirit of New Hampshire seeping into your skin at the Lower Falls Recreation Site on the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112), just a little bit west of the town of Conway. The Swift River drops as it travels on flat, naturally terraced platters of rocks, with a narrower channel down the middle for body surfing (the rapids are not extremely fast). People gather along the banks of the river, just a few steps from the road, to picnic, sunbathe and swim. You will also find people scattered all over the flat rocks. There’s a 80-car parking lot, and picnic tables with charcoal grills. No rest rooms, so please plan ahead for this need. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. The place is part of White Mountains National Forest and it is managed by the USDA Forest Service. 603-536-6100. Map.
